Mandatory communications data retention ‘appears neither necessary nor proportionate’, says UN body

Forcing telecoms companies to store so-called ‘communications data’ on the basis that it may be useful to government agencies in the future “appears neither necessary nor proportionate”, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has said.
